Mission:
We are committed to establishing a heartfelt, sincere, caring "Pittsburgh - style" community among the friends, fans and alumni living in South Florida through various events and community projects.
We are committed to working with the University on matters relevant to the visibility, awareness, growth and development of the University of Pittsburgh, its constituents and the Western Pennsylvania region.
We are committed to bringing awareness of the rich tradition of excellence of the University of Pittsburgh to South Florida families and prospective students.
History of the SFPC Club
The SFPC has had a long and impressive history of supporting the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Established in 1984 (founding President Ron Sigel)
  • Originated PART Program for alumni recruitment of prospective students
  • Awarded Alumni Volunteer of the year in 1992 (Bob Schwartz)
  • Immediate past President won Alumni Volunteer of the year in 1994 (Debbie Lendo Finke)
  • Pitt Alumni Association Banners awarded in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

The SFPC was awarded banner status from the Pitt Alumni Association Banner in 1998 and has continued to receive banner awards in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Jason Mastrian (Arts & Science '95) - Vice President

An active member of the South Florida Pitt Club since 1998, Jason earned a Bachelors of Science Degree in Neuroscience from Pitt in 1995.  After completing his degree he worked in the highly stressful health insurance industry over a year before deciding to attend massage therapy school.  After massage school, Jason re-located to South Florida and established a state licensed massage therapy practice. In 2001 he completed his first yoga teacher-training course and is currently one of 80 instructors in the world certified by the Budokon International Academy of the Yogic, Martial, and Living Arts.

Committee Chairs
Paul Britton (Educ '73) - Pitt Sports Chair
Paul earned his Master of Education in Counselor Education at Pitt. Paul currently works for Kemper Services. Paul successfully organized the Pitt vs. Miami basketball pregame brunch in 2004.


Dr. Albert Whitehead (DEN '90, Educ '94, KGSB '97) - Pro Sports Chair
Bart earned an MBA degree, a MEd.degree in Administration and Policy Studies and a DMD degree from Pitt. Bart was recruited by Nova Southeastern University in 2002 as the Director of Student and Administrative Services for the medical school after serving 12 years in a similar role at the dental school at Pitt. He also serves as the Southeast Regional Director of the Pitt Alumni Association. Bart sucessfully organized the South Florida's Pitt Club's first wine tasting event in 2004.

Barbara Hijek (SLIS '76, CAS '75)
Barbara earned a Masters of Library Science and a BA in English Literature while at Pitt. Barbara currently works as a researcher for the Tribune Sun-Sentinel.


Robert Zoeller (EDUC '97)
Bob received his degree in Excercise Physiology in 1997 and has been active in helping to stage various club activities including the SFPC wine tasting events.
Past Presidents

Debbie Lendo Finke

- President and Co-President, 2000-2003

(Arts & Sciences '81) Debbie has a long history of service to the University of Pittsburgh. A University of Pittsburgh Volunteer of the Year recipient in 1994, Debbie has served as a board member of the Pitt Alumni Association and participated in many of its committees including Bylaws, Scholarhip and Awards as well as serving as chair of the Latern Night committee. In addition, Debbie has held multiple positions at various regional Pitt alumni clubs including both the presidency and vice-presidency at both the Westmoreland and East Hills Pitt Clubs. Debbie obtained her Pitt leadership skills early while serving as Student Government President at the University of Pittsburgh, Greensburg and President of the University of Pittsburgh Ski Club. Debbie currently resides in Cranberry Township, PA.

Michael White

- President, 2003-2005

(Arts & Sciences '96) Mike graduated from Pitt in 1996 with degrees in Neuroscience and Biology. He was a basketball manager for Pitt's men's basketball squad from 1991-1994 and served as the "Bubble Boy" mascot during the 1998 football season, although he's not sure that info should be public. Employed by Pitt's School of Medicine Division of Neuropathology from '96-'99, Mike has maintained his CrazyPaco Pitt promotional web site since 1996 and has helped to organize the annual SOR Reunion and tailgate since 1999. Mike served as the SFPC's webmaster and the Miami Area Alumni Representative upon arriving in the South Florida area in 1999. Mike obtained his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Miami in 2005 and is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Mike continues to help with the club website.
Bob Schwartz

- President (?) and Co-President, 2000-2001

(Social Work '67) Bob has been instrumental to the success of the SFPC since its inception. Voted as the University of Pittsburgh's Alumni of the Year in 1992, Bob was responsible for establishment of the Pitt PART program which organizes alumni from around the country to recruit prospective students to the University. Bob is a Charter Life Member of the Pitt Alumni Association. He currently is the National Director of the ARMDI, the American branch of the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross and continues to be active in the South Florida Pitt Club.

 Jane Tucker

-President 1999-2000

(M.Ed. '70) Jane is a long time member of the South Florida Pitt Club and has served in additional capacities to her role as club president including secretary of the club from 2000-2003. Jane taught in Pittsburgh for four years before moving to Florida to continue her teaching career. In addition, she has served as the director of social justice education, mathematics education and computer education. She currently resides in Palm Beach County and is involved with human rights, women's health and spiratuality issues, as well as the South Florida Pitt Club.
